What a 'hearty welcome'

Living in the south-west, people come to automatically assume "Asian." However, much of Cabramatta in the 80's and early 90's was filled with European immigrants; Italians, Germans, even Russians. And then comes Schwarzwald, the still standing German-Austrian club on the other side of the tracks after all these years.

If you're after a hearty meal (think slow roasts and deep fried stuff), you're at the right place. Drown it with a schooner or pint with a couple (or 20) mates and you have a memorable night.

On Tap DAB beer (small $4 large $7?)

 Langosh $6.50

Hungarian garlic bread with garlic and sour cream. The deep fried bread was generously coated in crushed garlic and very different to our accustomed toasted garlic bread. Great starter to our meals to come.

Crumbed Mushroom w Tartare, Potato Salad & Cabbage $12.50

Fat and juicy button mushrooms lightly coated in batter and deep fried, how can you resist. The tartare, something I usually have with fish only, made as a surprisingly good dip. The potato salad was a decent heaping and had a nice balance of flavours, but the cabbage was left basically untouched.

Deep Fried Camembert Cheese $16.50

Not very certain what kind of special German/Austrian camembert was used, but it was sort of bitter, which was probably the point of the cranberry sauce. I was the only one that seemed to enjoy the goodness of melty oozing cheese.

Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb w Mashed Potatoes & Veg $27

Not my dish but it looks like such a filling meal. Susu had this and he said the lamb was a bit dry, cooked too long and not medium rare as it should be. Luckily there was plenty of gravy to help soak it up. The mash and vegetables lacked seasoning also lacked seasoning.

 Gypsy Platter $26

The gypsy platter is a generous serving of pork fillet, 2 pieces of schnitzel, crumbed mushrooms and a kransky to top it all of. Oh, there was also fries, cabbage, salad of lettuce and tomatoes as well. Def not one for the light hearted (or high cholesterol)...

 Pork Knuckle w  Sauerkraut $26?

My other friend had this dish and I forgotten what his comments were... Looks good though, doesn't it!?

 Chicken Schnitzel $23.50

I had a simple and classic chicken schnitzel. 2 generous pieces (that I could not finish), however it lacked some much needed sauce as it was a bit dry.

While there was nothing particularly special about the dishes, it was simple style cooking that reminded me much of my travels in Europe. The service was friendly and efficient considering how large our group was and I would happily return to down some more beers and try that pork knuckle.
