The first time I walked past Reuben Hills was a Sunday brunch morning, which is prob the worst time to go. Packed with a line of 10+ people waiting for a table, no thanks. Luckily, my catch up with the tripod was a Tuesday morning instead. The interior of Reuben Hills is your typical Surry Hills-esque dining, not that I'm complaining!
Cappuccino $4 small
Salted Caramel and Lime & Coconut milkshake $8.50 each
The coffee aroma was beautiful and enough to wake anyone up. Also top points for nice milk art. I, of course, opted for the salted caramel milkshake (salted caramel anything, really). This is the most perfect milkshake I've had to date, with all the right amounts of sweet and saltiness. Although not bad, tasting the lime & coconut one after just couldn't compare.
Dirty Bird spiced grilled chicken, tomatillo salsa, cheese, pickles, chipotle aioli on brioche $15
I thought brioche bun burgers were the most amazing thing to happen to burgers when I was first introduced to them. And while my love for brioche buns have not faded, this burger did not do it for me. The chicken was a big dry and would of been better if the breast was not flattened, however was well seasoned with a good hit of heat. Thank goodness for the pickles and aioli, which really lifted the burger.
Short rib burger w garlic ranch dressing & potato salad $18
Tiff had the short rib burger and enjoyed it. It was full of flavour, esp that garlic dressing. The slaw/potato salad made it feel a bit "healthier." Not sure if it was worth the $18 though considering serving size.
Crab tacos w young mango, habanero & roasted coconut $18
This was our least favourite dish, with much disappointment especially after reading some positive comments from my fellow bloggers. The soft taco was cold, not a lot of crab meat and the flavours didn't work that well together.
Really f**king great fried chicken w chilli in a basket $16
With a name like "really f**king great fried chicken" it is a given that we MUST try it. Boneless pieces of chicken with a lightly seasoned crumb. Perhaps our expectations were preempted from the name, but this was a disappointment and far from effing great. Good, but it's not Korean Fried Chicken. The chilli mayo (?) was the preferred dipping sauce and the chilli was nice surprisingly nice to eat the chicken with.
The NOT Reuben wagyu salt brisket, pickled slaw, manchego & horseradish cream on rye $16
Who loves wagyu? Better question, who doesn't?! I didn't think much of this, but ordered it upon recommendation from the waitress. And boy, was it good. While I'm usually a burger gal, this was easily my favourite out of all our dishes. While I usually don't like my beef cooked at all really, I'll make an exception for this wich. The perfect balance of flavours with the smooth aromatic cheese, tangy slaw and bit of mustard-y cream. Was de-lish and one I would order again. Am I moving on from burgers :O?
We had a pleasant experience at Reuben Hills. We were sat down quickly, and our orders came out in a timely manner. The staff were also very helpful in suggestions and taking our eaten dishes etc. away. Not sure how much I love the food, but that milkshake is one I would come back for.
