This was prob my hundredth time to Wagaya, and the reason why I always come back? "With other Japanese places, you just don't know what to expect. But you always know Wagaya you always know."
Since coming here during my teen years, Wagaya has changed very little (besides a few cool upgrades and expanded menu). The staff are super friend and efficient, prices are decent for anyone's budget and my Japanese cravings will always be satisfied. It's hard to argue with that...
Super easy and efficient touch screen menus in every booth
Iced Green Tea $4.50
A cool iced macha green tea drink with a large scoop of green tea ice cream on top, what a treat. Sometimes it can be a bit too sweet, and the ice is a bit annoying when trying to eat the ice cream, but it's a repeatedly ordered beverage.
Edamame $5.70
Steamed edamame beans with a gentle sprinkle of sea salt. A perfect pre-dins snack.
Takoyaki 6pc $7.50
Octopus balls with bonito flakes. Fresh of the hot ball making plate thing, the balls are hot and caution must be taken when biting into them unless you want a burnt tongue.
Gyoza $7.90
Handmade pan-grilled pork mince dumplings. Good ratio of meat and veg with a thin pastry. The dipping sauce goes well with the dumplings, but can be very oily. Also very hot so careful for burnt tongues!
Sashimi Salad $13.50
A bit disappointed in the salad. Large chunks of uncut lettuce leaves that I can barely fit into my mouth and not as many sashimi pieces as I remember. The sesame dressing is sweet and compliments the salad and mayo.
Renkon $6.50
Deep fried lotus root chips with a sweet soy dressing that is not even necessary. My all time favourite beer drinking snack food!
Dragon Roll $12.50
Marinated eel, cream cheese and cucumber sushi. I swear the eel use to be rolled inside the sushi as well? Maybe they've changed it for presentation purposes. Nevertheless, a fail proof dish (esp with extra renkon chips!)
Miso Soup $3.00
Ah the mysterious murky unknown of miso soup with seaweed, tofu and spring onions. I am unsure if this is made from scratch of powdered miso soup, but acts as a nice intermission between dishes.
Soft shell crab and cucumber roll w a chilli mayo dressing. Crab, good. Sushi, good. More renkon, best.
The great thing is that they also have private dining rooms for large groups, and lots of booths for smaller groups. This makes your dining experience much more intimate. Food, drinks and even the bill is ordered from the touch screen menu, which also shows where your food is (being cooked, served etc). Other items I love include the eel fried rice and kimchi fried rice. The cheese rice is also good! However there are some items you should stay away from, and some people consider the price too high for the portions given so something to consider for those with big appetites. Nonetheless, Wagaya will be a place I will always come back to.
