The Pie Tin, Newtown

The quintessential Aussie image: bloke in his Holden ute eating a Four-n-Twenty meat pie, hands and all. The Pie Tin has now bought this Aussie tradition to the likes of the Newtown hipsters. Yes, hipsters are eating pies now. Once hearing about the infamous "Apple Pie That Ate Newtown" that uses 5 kgs of apples, a trip needed to be planned. Off the main busy King St, it is easy to miss The Pie Tin unless you were actually looking for it.

Ducking into the warm and inviting shop we were greeted with the smell of hot pies. There was a few diners in the shop sitting at large communal dining table in the middle, while some opted for more private seating around. Two glass cabinets displayed the day's selection of sweet and savoury pies. Savoury pies are $5.80-$7.80 for the more gourmet ones, although it's hard to surpass the meal deal of 2 hot sides/salads or chips for $11-$13, especially when the sides include Boston baked beans, sweet mash potato or mushy peas. However, being the sugar addicts we are we only tried the sweet pies today.

Passionfruit Cream Pie

Coconut Cream Pie, Cream Coconut Custard Pie

Coconut Cream Pie $7.50

Perhaps the custard version would of been a bit better. The bottom layer of vanilla custard was not too sweet with a toasted coconut flavour, while the top was light and fluffy. Flavours were great, there was just a tad too much cream for my liking.

Gooey Caramel and Chocolate Ganache Pie $7.50

A slice of rich decadence. The gooey caramel middle layer was amazing with the crust and the milk chocolate ganache. Similiar to the coconut cream pie though, too much top layer, where the chocolate sweetness would overpower those of the caramel. Pie would of been great with a cup of tea to wash it down, as it gets a bit sickening after a few bites.

Brown Butter Pecan Pie $7.50

My dining companion dislikes pecans so didn't enjoy this pie, but for any lover of pecan pie then you will find that this pie offers a generous amount of pecans. Not sure what brown butter is, but regardless the pie was demolished in bliss.

The Apple Pie That Ate Newtown $10.50

The crust can barely hold its contents! The pie is stuffed with an impressive amount of cinnamon spiced apple slices. I had a bite in store and took the rest home for the fam, cause warm apple pie (with ice cream) is the best comfort. The crust top had a crunch from the sugar and the apples had a nice mushy/crunch texture with the right amount of sweetness.

Service took a while as it takes a bit to slice up the pie, but time was passed by peaking through to the baking area where the pastry chefs were making spinach and ricotta rolls. Rolled out on the table it looked more than 2 metres in length! While the sweet pies were a bit hit and miss, a return is a must for the large range of savoury pies on offer.
