A while ago I read a post from ChocolateSuze describing authentic American-style milkshakes and flavoured fairy floss... Jaw drop, gather crew, head out. Unfortunately we didn't make a booking and by the time we got there at prime time dinner hour of 7.30 all tables were reserved, so note to make booking next time (yes, there WILL be a next time). The waitress told us it might be almost an hour wait, but we put our names down anyways and decided to come back after grabbing a few drinks to work up an appetite.

Opened in December 2012, Jazz City Milk Bar has already built up much hype from its "parent" store Jazz City Diner that is just around the corner on Crown St. The milk bar has been more crowded of the late as the diner closes it's doors for 2 month kitchen renovations. The new diner menu is reinvented with an American barbeque focus. Think RIBS! The Milk Bar was opened with a more dessert orientated approach. Of course, savoury options were also necessary and I'm very thankful for this change.

Not sure where the idea derived from, but have always wanted to go to an American diner-style restaurant and just drink a milkshake. It seems like the typical American thing to do and I was always so fascinated by the idea. *Insert My MilkShake Brings All The Boys To The Yard song*

Malted Chocolate Milkshake $8

Malted Peanut Butter Milkshake $8

My eyes lit up when I saw Peanut Butter flavoured milkshake *insert love heart eyes emoticon*. However, I was torn between that and the classic chocolate. Luckily V ordered the chocolate so that I would get the best of both worlds.
The milkshake was very thick in consistency, but it was possibly the most delicious thing I've ever tried. It was very rich in peanut flavour but not sickening, not too sweets as the salty peanutiness balanced it out. I had to stop myself from slurping the whole thing! The chocolate one was also delicious and not too sweet either. A million times better than the usual crappy chocolate syrup ones you would get in cafe's.

Our burgers arrived not too long after our milkshakes, and thank goodness cause we were starving by then. Large two-hand holding burger with a large side of fries of choice was served small plastic container, and it was everything I imagined diner-style burgers to be. Burgers come with a side of fries to choose from; sweet potato fries, creole fries (lightly seasoned) and normal french fries. You can also substitute fries for onions for an additional $4.

Mushroom & Caramelised Onion Burger w Sweet Potato Fries $17

I ordered the mushroom and caramelised onion burger, and it was by far the group favourite. Ground beef patty, Swiss brown mushroom sauteed with caramelised onion, lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickle relish, and blue cheese foam on a sesame seed bun. I really dislike when the patty is the size of half the bun so that it's just basically bread. So when I see this large beef patty loaded with mushrooms and onions, I fell in love just a little bit. The creamy mayo and tangy pickle relish balanced all the rich oily flavours out with the "salad" of lettuce and tomato giving that refreshing hit. The blue cheese foam wasn't really evident to me though. The sweet potato fries were super crispy, but felt that it needed a bit more seasoning or something to compliment the burger. However, if it was eaten on it's own with like a beer or something it would of been fab. Seriously worth getting fat for.

Pork Belly Burger w Sweet Potato Fries $18

Grilled slice pork belly with Boston baked beans, pickled cucumber, tomato, caramelised onion and lettuce on a sesame bun. I was a bit sceptical of baked beans with pork belly, not a usual combination but hey, if it works for Boston then it'll work for me. Juicy and tender pork belly slices that was delicious with each bite. Surprisingly the baked beans worked well with it, giving it a a nice mushy-ness and tang to the pork belly with the pickled cucumber breaking up the rich flavours.

Texas Chilli Cheese Burger w Creole Potato French Fries $18

Texas style spicy beef, chilli beef patty, cheese, lettuce, mayo and pickle relish. This is a true bloke's burger, packed full of meat with melted cheese, not dissimilar to a sloppy joe. Great in flavour, however it wouldn't have pulled through without the cheese and pickle relish. The chilli was subtle so great for those who can't handle the heat, but as an advocate chilli eater I was expecting a bit more punch. The creole fries were amazing, and looking back I think they were the clearer choice to compliment a burger. They were golden, crispy and seasoned well with chicken salt and paprika (I think?). Reminded me of Red Lea hot chips!

Chilli Cheese Fries $10

Spicy beef chilli mince with fire roasted cheese over a bed of southwest seasoned french fries. The mince was a bit disappointing in flavour, similar to the Texas burger the chilli lacked much needed heat that seemed customary to southern America food. Instead it made a great side bowl of chips. When eaten together it reminded me of 2am snack pack runs.

Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wings w Onion Rings $22

I really wanted to try the Chicken and Waffles ($24) but majority voted chicken wings, so waffles I will be back for you! Chicken wings were marinaded with Jamaican jerk marinade, seasoned with jerk seasoning, served with onion rings and a citrus dipping sauce. Having never tried Jamaican jerk before, I was unsure of what to expect. The chicken wings were some deep fried goodness though, with crispy skin and the flavours of spice lingering on your lips. There was a really distinct cinnamon/nutmeg flavour as well that might not please all, but flavours were balanced out when dipped in the sweet and tangy citrus sauce. The golden crispy onion rings were pleasant, but were barely touched as we reached for fries instead.

Pecan Chocolate Pie w Vanilla Ice Cream $8 + $3 per ice cream scoop

If you're ever and Milk Bar or the Diner, sometimes you'll see owner and chef Dan McGuirt who served us our pie. I asked if the pie was home made, and he looked at me and laugh at the silliness of my question. It's good to see the growth of "homely" style dishes, made with skill, care and (above all) love. Not to shock you all, but I've never actually had tried pecan pie or never had the opportunity to. But if I could marry a pie, it would prob be this one. It was lovely, warm, rich, decadent, gooey in the middle but golden crumble on the top. It was everything I would want a pie to be. Perhaps one of the greater more memorable desserts I've had in the longest of times, and if nothing else I had today was worth coming back for, I would come back for this pie.

Green Apple Fairy Floss $5

Watermelon Fairy Floss $5

No matter what age you are, I think you are never too old for fairy floss. It takes me back to when I was a child at carnivals or the Easter show with my parents, and I think it's food that bring back these memories that really have a place no matter how old you are. The spin of FLAVOURED fairy floss was jaw dropping, like how come I've never had this before! They were both so delish and sweet and made a great end to the meal. Will def come back to try the other flavours such as Tutti Fruitti Bubblegum, Blue Raspberry and Grape!

And it's the small things that count at the end of the day. The playing of soothing New Orleans jazz and blues, the cute quirky diner furniture and decor and the kind and attentive staff made my dining experience at Jazz City Milk Bar ever so wonderful. Our bottle of table water was refilled without asking, staff were quick to serve when hailed and the most amazing comfort food and cheat day meal. New Orleans, I'm coming for you.
