The best friend, I and our partners got an amazing deal for Kobe Jones which I've read/heard/seen for years now but have yet to try out cause fortunate for me my friends prefer spending their money on clubbing or shopping. I was a bit too excited to try at the much talked about Japanese-fusion restaurant. The waitress who served us was very friendly and it had a nice relaxing ambience. Though the lighting was a bit, I guess it's what creates that romantic, alone-time atmosphere. Def a place to try out if you're into fine dining, don't recommend for large groups for birthdays etc. but rather small intimate groups. We got the Sentou Menu, usually $165 pp.
2009 Logan Moscato, Orange, NSW. 375ml
I'm not much of a drinker unfortunately but I do like trying out different wines (especially Moscato). I can dessert wine for dinner, cause I'm just too bad ass like that. Not too sweet for a dessert wine, which is good to wash out the sugary goodness but not sweet enough to have with dinner. I think I still much rather prefer my trust brand, Brown Brothers. It was love at first taste.
Wagyu Tenderloin Tataki
Seared and chilled, served rare with garlic, ginger and ponzu sauce
When your dad cooks steak for a living, you tend not to eat... ever. But I'm a sucker for a good proportionate wagyu steak dish, how can you say no? I love rare meat and I love this sauce. Each slice was precisely cut and seared perfectly.
Number One Special
Crab salad with avocado wrapped in kingfish and baked with Kobe Jones’ secret sauce
Ahh-mazing! If you're going to get anything on the menu, it HAS to be this dish. It's so smartly designed so when you bite into it, you get a bit of each ingredient. Just thinking about the crab salad with that sauce right now is making my mouth water. The presentation was also beautiful, nice creamy top with perfectly scorched markings.
Tempura Hokkaido
Scallops stuffed with crab salad and asparagus, drizzled with a bittersweet soy sauce glaze
I wasn't too big on these. They were a bit cold and the scallop flavour overided the the other flavours. The tempura was lovely though, beautiful colour and wasn't too crunchy and over fried.
Sashimi Salad
Garden greens topped with fresh sashimi, crab salad and drizzled with ponzu dressing
I know lettuce is like 99% water, but I feel so healthy eating it! Is it just me... If you can't tell already, I love my Japanese food. Bring on the raw fish! They were nice thin slices, which was good cause my partner can't eat thick ones cause he doesn't enjoy the texture as much as I do. It also has seaweed salad in it as well just to mix things up.You can taste the freshness and again, that sauce!
Chicken Karaage
Marinated chicken coated in seasoned potato flour shallow fried, served with teriyaki sauce and chilli mayonnaise
I love chicken but was never a big fan of the Japanese-style fried chicken, like KFC and food courts etc. The batter is just too think usually leaving your mouth with a 50c-size piece of chicken. But this chicken karaage was delicious! The batter was just enough to cover the chicken pieces, and it wasn't as oily as deep fried ones. Combined with the chilli mayo... I feel like chicken now ;(
Sizzled Scallop Carpaccio
Scallop sashimi, sizzled with heated extra virgin olive oil, and drizzled with wasabi pepper sauce
Scallop sashimi, sizzled with heated extra virgin olive oil, and drizzled with wasabi pepper sauce
Whether you're a fan of wasabi or not, this dish will cater for you. There is still an aroma of wasabi but it doesn't hit up your nose. Also good if you like scallops which were nice and juicy.
Seafood Poke
Hawaiian-style sashimi cubes marinated in poke sauce
This dish was fantastic. The sashimi, the seaweed salad with that sauce eaten all together. Beautiful flavours and textures! I also think it's cute how it's served in a Martini glass, smaller portions means more room in the tumtum.
Vegetable Tempura
Honestly, I hated this dish. The sauce was plain, the vegetables were hard as rock and difficult to bit in to and the sweet potato, not sweet!
Volcano Roll
Oven baked scallops layered on a crab salad avocado roll, with special cream sauce and sesame seed and shallot sprinkles
This is one of their more favourable and popular dishes. My colleague told me this serving use to be way bigger though. However it was a good sharing size considering how many dishes we had. The bite-sized scallops were delicious with the cream sauce. Actually, the whole this was delicious. 'Nough said.
Alaskan Crab
We were given this little pick things before we got the crab and were all in wonder. I know, we're such duds haha. You're suppose to use the little pick thing to dig out the crab meat from the crab leg. Though a bit difficult as the leg KIND OF HURTS TO HOLD but the sweet juicy crab meat drizzled with lime juice with just a little bit of dipping sauce was worth it.
Hawaiian Roll
Prawns, cucumber, burdock root and pineapple chilli jam topped with tuna and avocado and drizzled with poke sauce
Prawns, cucumber, burdock root and pineapple chilli jam topped with tuna and avocado and drizzled with poke sauce
Simply put it, the dish was nice But it didn't taste like anything too special and fancy-shmancy.
Wagyu Tenderloin Hot Rock
I know, two Wagyu items on one menu. You can see how incredibly beautiful and tender that meat is already. Our kind waitress put a few cubes onto the hot plate to get it started for us and it took seconds to cook (only cause I like it rare, hehe). Served with (from memory) salt & pepper, teriyaki sauce and some ginger soysauce (which is fab).
Ama Ozen
In the words of Rachel Zoe, "I DIE!" If there's one thing I'm willing to travel and pay a bit more for, it's desserts. Their famous 8 sampler dessert platter which (from memory) consists of (clockwise):
1) Their famous chocolate chopsticks - rich, fine quality dark chocolate
2) Kanpai Trifle - fresh strawberries marinated in crème de cassis and lemon with a bit of sugar. Served with raspberry sorbet which was just the right amount of sweet for me. And it's not fairy floss :( just sugary hair...
3) Chocolate Trio - Chocolate brownie with green tea ice-cream. Made from the same quality dark chocolate as the chopsticks, oozing warm inside. The green tea compliments it greatly, cools it down and takes a bit of that sweetness away.
4) Sushi Me 2 - New York cheesecake with strawberry slices and a fruity purée on top that makes it look like a sushi.
5) Macaroons - Coffee, Strawberry (?) and some other flavour. Flavours vary every time. Not the best, rather eat the other desserts.
6) Anko - green tea flavoured crème brulee. Came out flaming which means they just caramelised the sugary top, making it nice and warm to crack into. I've tried my fair share of creme brulee's, and even making it (difficult, I tell you). The warm crunchy top in contrast to the smooth chilled bottom is what makes it so iconic, IMO. The texture is beautiful, not too liquid-y, with a not-too-sweet custard and a hint of green tea. And the top isn't too thick or burnt.
7) Berry Yoghurt - forgot what the name was but it's like this yoghurt taste but not as liquid like as yoghurt. Similar to the Vietnamese Yoghurt. Topped with a berry purée.
8) Pacific Pearls - tapioca balls cooked slowly in coconut milk, vanilla and sugar. Served with fresh mango.
That was a long post.
Till next time xx
